A real mixed weekend for our Galway Clinic sponsored community based club Maree/Oranmore fc.
On Saturday in the big u14 Regional sfai semi final Maree/Oranmore fc conceeded a late late goal in Oranmore in front of a large attendance to go down 1-0 to Westport Utd. In fairness neither side deserved to loose in an excellent game well reffed by the man in the middle Howard Mc Carthy.Westport Utd play Castlebar Celtic in an all Mayo Regional Final. The club u14s under Kevin Costelloe and Trevor Quinn can still look forward to a last 32 tie away to Kilcullen(Co Kildare) in the sfai u14 Cup proper.
The u12 div 1 side had an excellent 3-2 win against a fine Corofin Utd side in Corofin to put them in second place in the table, with goals from Jack Leahy and a brace from Jack Raftery.
The u13 championship side had a tough assignment away to Tuam Celtic A and played very well, 1-1 through Maxsim Lukjanov with five minutes to go, they eventually went down 3-1 to their North Galway hosts.
On Sunday our youths first division side certainly put it up to premier side Galway Hibernians in the u18 Connacht Cup quarter final in Oranmore in tough weather conditions and eventually went down 2-1 to Hibernians. Niall Rooney got a brace for the visitors in the opening half but the Maree/Oranmore fc lads certainly upped their game in the second half and replied early in the second half with an excellent looping finish from Dean Mooney, indeed in the last few minutes Cian Costello Hynes in the Hibs goal had to be on his best to keep out good efforts from Kevin Byrnes,Ben Wright and Mooney. This was an overall excellent team performance by the Maree/Oranmore lads as they now strive to win their League and Cup.
The adult A Junior side will be very disappointed after exiting the Connacht Junior Cup 3-0 away to St Bernards. A closer game than the scoreline suggests, manager Emlyn Long will be anxious to get their Premier League season back on track when they host West Utd on Saturday next.
