All our games in Oranmore including the St Columbas Credit Union Invitational Tournament fell foul of the very poor weather.
The big game of the weekend was the FAI u17 last sixteen game v Coachford afc from Cork who are unbeaten in their division.A shocking last minute penalty decision acknowledged even by our opponents as such decided the game,a game which Maree/Oranmore fc dominated and who were desperately unlucky not to capitalise on extensive possession and territorial advantage. This game was switched to Mayfield Utd 4g pitch in Cork City in bitterly cold conditions after Coachfords venue was deemed unplayable. The Maree/Oranmore lads knew they would have to work hard as they were without the services of Alan Greene(school trip) and the injured Darragh O C onnor. On 29 minutes the Maree/Oranmore lads took a deserved lead when an excellent through ball by skillful left full Kevin Horgan found the hard working Rory Carberry and his deft cross was headed into the top corner by Princewell Diala who worked extremely hard in the middle of the park. Two minutes remaining in the opening half saw Coachford equalise after an intial effort was well parried by keeper Conor Carroll.
The second half saw Alex Fearon,David Mc Carthy,Ben Wright and introduced Oisin Quinlan dominating the middle with the excellent Ronan Hanniffy and Thomas Heraghty absorbing any attacks. With extra time looming referee John Sweeney bizzarely pointed to the spot after a clean looking tackle on the Coachford attacker which surprised the large crowd. An unusual decision by the competent ref but one which changed the tie again. The Maree/Oranmore lads went down 2-1.The complexities of sport with Coachford AFC now earning a last 8 spot at home to Athlone side Willow Park. This was one that got away.We wish our opponents well.
