FAI Cup
The big story of the weekend was Maree/Oranmore fc last 16 games in Irish Cup Competitions at u12 and u18 level. Maree/Oranmore fc u18s were hopeful of springing a surprise on last years FAI u17 Finalists Carrigaline Utd in Oranmore. The Maree/Oranmore lads came away with a tremendous 3-2 win on a gluepot pitch in Oranmore against excellent opposition. Going a goal down after just 12 minutes, Maree/Oranmore responded within 5 minutes when a kick out from the hands of keeper O Neill deceived the Carrigaline keeper to go directly in to level matters. Seven minutes from half time the Cork lads took the lead after converting from close range. However the character of the Maree/Oranmore lads showed following good approach work from Ronan Hanniffy and Ben Creaven assisted by skillful Alan Greene saw Princewell Diala through and he finished in style. With 18 minutes to go Maree/Oranmore got an unlikely winner, a short corner from Greene found Hanniffy and he smashed to the top corner. Credit must go to the Cork side who dominated the last 20 minutes, hit the post, offside decisions and great defending from Morrissey, Horgan, Creaven and Hanniffy. The hard work of Sean Delany, Rory Carberry, Oisin Smith and Alex Fearon deserves mention. This was a game where the Carrigaline Utd threw the kitchen sink against a young Maree/Oranmore fc side with six u17 players in the starting 11. The club have reached an Irish Quarter final and will play last years u17 winners Tramore in Waterford in the last eight. We wish the lads well. Indeed Carrigaline Utd can count themselves very unlucky in a pulsating game.
