A real mixed bag of results for local community based club Maree/Oranmore fc kindly sponsored by The Galway Clinic. With the girls game in the club growing, it was a very pleasing result on Sunday last for Eoin Cotters and Tony Jordans charges at u14 level with a hard earned 3-0 victory against the hosts Bearna Na Forbacha Aontaithe. The goals all in the opening half came courtesy of a brace from Nicole Duffy and another from Hannah Whelan. In truth it was a fine team performance with Aoife Carney,Erin Doyle and Saoirse Jordan performing well in defence while midfielders Emily Grealy and Holly Comer working particularly well while up top there were fine displays from Rachel Burke and Dara Sheppard.
The u17/U18 Premier side went a goal down to a spirited West Coast Utd side in the Premier League in Oranmore but came back to win at the end 5-1 against good opposition. The goals came from Sean Delany(3),Ronan Hanniffy and Alan Greene. It was a very workman like performance by the lads who face inform Athenry fc on Sunday next in a top of the table encounter. The lads play in their National Quarter Final on Sunday March 11th away to kingpins Tramore from Waterford,we wish them well.
Meanwhile the Youths Division 1 side play Craughwell Utd this weekend,a win would keep their title aspirations alive in this one round League which is extremely competitive.
The u12 division 4 side played Knocknacarra fc in a close encounter in Cappagh Park,a Kevin Blankson effort was not enough in a 2-1 defeat to the home side.
The u15 Premier side were held to a 1-1 draw by a plucky Athenry fc side in Oranmore on Saturday last, with 11 corners in the first half in particular the lads will be disappointed not to gather all three points with Emmanuel Olaloko scoring in the first half.
The u15 Division 1 side put in a brave performance against visitors Kiltullagh Pioneers but it was not to be.
The adult mens Premier side were even at 1-1 at half time against second placed West Utd at half time in last Saturdays League encounter but late goals in quick succession gave West a 4-1 win.The Maree/Oranmore goal came from Neil Greaney. Our club would like to thank ClubVitae Oranmore for sponsoring tops for the lads and also help us avail of the top range of facilities for adult mens training,it is very much appreciated. The Premier team remain in a credible fourth place in the League at this point in the season.
The u13 championship side went down to a stronger Athenry side in the league on Sunday last with Seaghan Corry netting.
The St Columbas Credit Union Invitational Tournament will continue this Sunday March 4th with u9 and u10 boys once more in action.Teas and coffees were much in demand in the biting cold wind with the likeable Jim Prendergast doing a brisk trade in his red van.We hope all players in all fellow community clubs are enjoying their football in a happy, non competitive atmosphere.Well done to Tournament Directors David Watterson and Sean Horsman for their great efforts.
