A very busy conclusion to the 2017/2018 season for Galway Clinic sponsored local community club Maree/Oranmore fc.
This weekend saw the visit of renowned International coach Jason Blunt who worked with many club sides and groups of club coaches. Special credit to Jason for an excellent job done and to our Director of Coaching Mike Quirke who organised the weekens itenary.
On the playing pitches both the u14 and u15 Premier sides both won their concluding games, the u15 Premier side have finished third in their division following a fine 5-2 win at home to Bearna Na Forbacha Aontaithe with Ciaran Black netting three while the u14 Premier side defeated Athenry fc 3-0 with goals from Rowan Allan,Killian Bolly and Ben Costelloe. The lads have one game remaining away to Mervue. They will finish second or third in the Premier Division.
Our adult A side who have already consolidated their Premier status went down 3-2 in a bizarre Michael Byrne Cup semi final game away to Renmore afc. Renmore got three penalties all finished by John Finnegan while the scorers for Maree/Oranmore fc were Brendan Tully and Conor Murphy. This was rough justice for Maree/Oranmore in a game they dominated.
There was great excitement for our u10 and u11 club sides who took part in their annual blitzes organised by acting chair of the Galway Football Association Tom Trill in Eamonn Deacy Park over the weekend. Each of the age groups saw our club enter three sides. Two of our u11 sides reached the u11 cup and Shield semi finals while one of our u10 sides(Maree/Oranmore Town) went all the way to the Cup Final losing 3-2 to Knocknacarra fc in the decider. Thanks to the following u11 coaches Fergus Kelleher,David Raftery,Ger Cleary,Fionn Stapleton,John Gilbert,James Fallon,David Watterson and Mike Quirke. Our u10 coaches who deserve a mention include Noel Carroll,Philip Smith,Barry Goodwin,Adrian Brosnahan,Marian Grealish and Wesley Coyne. Well done to all involved.
The u12 boys on Monday last played in the u12 s.f.a.i Regional final in Westport against Westport Utd but went down 2-0 in a very gutsy performance. The opening goal for Westport was controversial but the stronger team won on the day in very warm conditions. The lads can be proud of their performances this season.
Congrats to Oranmore Boys National School(Scoil Iosaif Naofa) on coming second in the Spar sponsored Primary schools National Finals held in the splendid Aviva Stadium. Well done to all the squad and to teachers Mr O Boyle,Mr Gormally and Mr Gleeson while Principal Maeve Meenaghan and all her staff deserve great credit too.
Our u12 and u14 girls travelled to Knocknacarra fc who hosted an excellent Tournament on Bank Holiday Monday. Each team played 5 games each in their group.Clubs involved included Corrib Rangers,Oughterard afc,Corofin Utd, Maree/Oranmore fc and hosts Knocknacarra fc. The u14 girls qualified for the semi final and were unlucky to lose out 1-0 while the u12 girls lost the shield final loosing out 1-0 in the second period of extra time. Great credit to Girls coordinator Tony Jordan and to organisers Knocknacarra fc.
Our club agm will be held in late June with details to be announced. If you want the club to continue and prosper for your child we hope to see you there.
